Uganda Cranes turn focus to DR Congo friendlies

The Uganda Cranes have safely arrived in South Africa, shifting their attention to two international friendly matches against the Democratic Republic of Congo scheduled for October 2 and 4.

The team travelled from Hoima earlier today, Wednesday, September 30, and has since settled at Hotel Sky in Sandton, where preparations for the upcoming double-header will continue.

The trip to South Africa comes on the back of a memorable outing at the Hoima City Stadium, where Uganda secured a narrow but important victory over Libya.

The match marked the Cranes’ first appearance at the newly constructed stadium, making the occasion particularly significant for the team and its supporters.

However, the squad travelling to South Africa features some notable omissions from the team that defeated Libya, with Nathan Asiimwe, Rogers Mato and Aziz Kayondo among the players who will not feature in the upcoming friendlies.

Their absence presents an opportunity for the players who have travelled to South Africa to gain valuable international exposure and make their contributions as the technical team continues to assess its options.

The travelling squad includes a blend of experienced players and emerging talent, with Allan Okello, Travis Mutyaba, Steven Mukwala, Denis Omedi and Baba Alhassan among the notable names expected to feature in the preparations.

Other players in the squad include Toby Sibbick, Kenneth Semakula, Rogers Torach, Akpan Udoh, Hannington Ssebwalunyo, David Lukwago and Allan Oyirwoth.

The squad also features Kelvin Boateng, Sadam Masereka, Hilary Mukundane, James Bogere, Herbert Achayi, Joseph Seremba, Jonathan Odongo, Toto Majub Bran, Geofrey Lubanga Kene, Richard Basangwa, Gavin Kizito Mugweri and Frank Ssebufu.

Completing the travelling contingent are Gaucho DebohiDieudonne, Diaby Souleymane, Abdoulaye Sissako and Kingdom Osayi.

With two matches against DR Congo scheduled within three days, the friendlies will provide Uganda with an opportunity to test its squad against another African opponent while continuing to build on the momentum generated by the victory over Libya.

For the players who have made the trip, the matches also offer an opportunity to impress and strengthen their claims for future national team selection.
