Uganda’s representatives in the Caf Interclub competitions Vipers and Kitara will have to negotiate longer and tougher routes in their quest for group stages.
The two sides are as expected among the teams that will begin their continental journey in the first preliminary round ahead of the draw on Thursday in Cairo, Egypt.
This means that both Vipers and Kitara will play at least four matches and two preliminary rounds in the Caf Champions League and Caf Confederation Cup respectively.
Only three clubs; defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, home to Denis Onyango, Moroccan side RS Berkane and Tunisia’s Esperance de Tunis received direct qualification to the second preliminary round amongst the 65 clubs registered for Caf Champions League.
In the Caf Confederation Cup, Tanzania’s Azam, new home to Ugandan starlet Hassan Mubiru, Egypt’s Al Ahly, Morocco’s Raja Casablanca & AS FAR, Algeria’s USM Alger & CR Belouizdad, DR Congo’s AS Maniema and Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa secured direct qualification to the second preliminary round.
The exemption from the first preliminary round is based on the continental rankings and recent performances in the continental competitions.
Vipers, the UPL champions seek to qualify for the group stages for only the second time in their history while Kitara, Stanbic Uganda Cup winners target first ever group stages qualification on their second continental attempt.
The two competitions provide brilliant financial incentives with the winner of the Champions League earning $ 6 million, two more than the winner of the Caf Confederation Cup with losing finalists receiving $ 2million and $ 1 million respectively.
Reaching the group stages assures a club of $ 400,000 and $ 700,000 in the Confederation Cup and Champions League respectively.
CAF has also promised to offer support of $ 100,000 to clubs eliminated in the preliminary rounds a move intended to strengthen African club football.
