WAFCON 2026: Hosts Morocco ran riot against Kenya to lay down a marker

Morocco made their intentions clear at this year’s Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after sweeping aside Kenya in their first game of the group stage.

The Atlas Lionesses secured a commanding 4-0 win over the Harambee Starlets in the game played on Sunday at the El Hassan Stadium in Rabat.

Ibtissam Jraidi bagged a brace, while Sakina Ouzraoui and Meriem Atiq added a goal each to guide Morocco to victory.

Kenya’s return to the continental showpiece after a decade of absence was met by the ruthless attack of Morocco who are seeking to win the title for the first time.

Despite showing early resilience, the hosts proved too good and by the 20th minute, the breakthrough was found with Ouzraoui’s low drive hitting the back of the net.

Eight minutes later, Morocco doubled their advantage with Atiq rising highest to node home from a corner kick delivery.

Jraidi stretched the lead further shortly before the break before completing her brace two minutes upon restart.

Morocco are now in firm lead of Group A alongside Algeria who beat Senegal 2-0 earlier on.

Group A action will resume on Thursday, 30th July with wounded Kenya facing Senegal while Morocco will be up against Algeria.
