Imagine sitting in your college lecture when, out of nowhere, someone bursts out with racist slurs and flashes a Nazi sign while screaming racist foolishness. Sounds insane, right? That’s exactly what happened at a Seattle college. But it’s what the professor and students did next that has social media praising their response and celebrating a moment of unity.
On Oct. 1, cellphone footage captured an intruder, identified as Sam Polyak, interrupting a psychology class at the University of Washington in Kane Hall, which holds some of the largest classrooms on campus. According to one student’s account, Polyak barged into the room, raising the Nazi salute while spewing racist slurs at the professor. He returned forty minutes later, causing more havoc.
“He came in again and started calling us ‘degenerates’ for learning the material — throwing out a bunch of slurs and harmful rhetoric,” Ashlyn Anderson told KING5. “A lot of us weren’t going to tolerate that.”
In the now-viral clip, Associate Professor Nicole McNichols and the entire classroom can be seen chasing after Polyak as he records them following him.
The professor leading the charge boldly throws her middle finger up at Polyak as she walks toward him, with students recording the entire moment. Polyak, still filming, walks backward, but the professor shows no signs of backing down from her pursuit.
Things escalate when a female student runs up and pepper-sprays Polyak, triggering the entire class to chase after him as he darts down the Kane Hall steps and across the quad.
Students sprint through corners as they try to catch Polyak, and eventually, they do. But instead of the beatdown most were anticipating, they surrounded him while they waited for campus police to arrive.
Polyak later told KING5 that he received some cuts and bruises and was spat on by the students before their arrival. Yikes!
According to The Daily UW, the University of Washington confirmed that Polyak, who is not a student, has since been banned from campus, and criminal charges against him are pending.
“Kudos to those students in there that chased him out,” sophomore Jayden Brewer told KING5. “Never advocating violence, but they showed him you can’t do that. That’s not okay.”
Since the video release, social media has been sending their praises to the professor and students who stood up to Polyak’s actions.
“My good sis with the accuracy on that pepper spray,” one TikTok user wrote.
“I love how his OWN folks came after him first!” another TikTok user chimed in. “Stand up against hate!”
And of course, Black people can’t ever be serious, with one user joking, “You shouldn’t have been talking s***.”
