3 men, 17-year-old boy charged with stealing tractor belonging to Brian Mira

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Four people, including a 17-year-old minor, have been charged with stealing a tractor belonging to businessman Brian Mira, brother of Belmopan Area Representative Oscar Mira and a figure linked to one of the family businesses at the centre of the ongoing “Mira Millions” controversy.

Tyrone Jordan, 27, of Hattieville; Dwayne Garbutt, 44, of Belize City; Estevan Humes, 51, of Santa Familia, Cayo; and the 17-year-old Hattieville resident appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where they were jointly charged with theft.

All four pleaded not guilty and were granted bail of $3,000 each plus one surety in the same amount. They must report to the police station nearest their homes every Friday and are due back in court in November.

Police say the case unfolded shortly after 11 p.m. on September 5 when Hattieville officers, acting on information about a stolen tractor, went to an area near Mile 19.5 on the George Price Highway.

Officers reportedly encountered a red Massey Ferguson tractor being driven along a dirt road. A white International 10-wheeler truck was parked nearby, while a black Chevrolet Equinox was allegedly seen exiting the dirt road behind the tractor.

Police say the driver of the Equinox attempted to reverse after seeing the police mobile. Garbutt, who was allegedly driving the SUV, and the 17-year-old passenger were detained.

Humes was allegedly found driving the tractor, while two other men who were near the 10-wheeler truck were also initially detained as part of the investigation.

Police subsequently contacted Mira, 44, of Belmopan City, who visited the Hattieville Police Station and provided documents establishing his ownership of the tractor.

According to police, Humes later told investigators that he had been communicating with a man he knew as “Tyrone” and had arranged to pick up the Massey Ferguson tractor near Mile 19.5.

Police later detained Jordan in Hattieville on September 6. Investigators say Humes identified him as the man with whom he had allegedly been communicating regarding the tractor.

Jordan, Garbutt, Humes and the minor were subsequently charged with theft.

The identity of the tractor’s owner adds a political dimension to what would otherwise be a routine theft case.

Brian Mira is the brother of Oscar Mira, who stepped away from his Cabinet duties in June amid intense scrutiny over leaked SmartStream records showing millions of dollars in Government payments to businesses linked to members of the Mira family.

One of those businesses is MP Farms. Public reports identified Brian Mira as a contact for the company, while Stanley Mira was listed as its owner. 7News reported that leaked records showed 601 transactions totaling approximately $5.67 million to MP Farms between September 2024 and June 2026, with the overwhelming majority originating from the Ministry of Defence.

Earlier records also reportedly showed almost $390,000 in payments to MP Farms processed in a single day in September 2025, during the period when Oscar Mira held responsibility at the Ministry of Defence.

Oscar Mira has denied influencing procurement decisions or Government payments involving his relatives. The Auditor General is currently examining procurement processes at the Ministry of Defence, and no finding of wrongdoing against Mira has been made.

Garbutt was also separately arraigned on three traffic offences arising from the investigation. He pleaded guilty to driving without third-party insurance, driving an unlicensed motor vehicle and driving without a valid Belize driver’s licence.

He was fined $205 for the insurance offence, $55 for driving an unlicensed vehicle and $105 for driving without a valid Belize driver’s licence, with separate payment deadlines and default prison terms.
