The Somali President invites opposition groups to Nov. 14-18 talks on elections in Mogadishu, launching a major diplomatic effort to reach a national political consensus following mounting disputes over the federal voting schedule. In an official press release issued by Villa Somalia, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud extended formal invitations to prominent political and civil society organizations to attend a five-day National Consultative Forum. Recipients of the executive invitation include former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo’s Nabad iyo Nolol party, the Somali Future Council, the National Unity Forum, and the Civil Society Coalition.
The presidential initiative comes shortly after the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission announced that parliamentary elections would take place on April 15, 2027, followed by a presidential election on May 15, 2027. Opposition factions quickly rejected the proposed timetable, arguing that unilateral decision-making regarding electoral model transitions risks undermining national unity and institutional governance. Executive representatives stated that the upcoming consultative forum aims to bring key political rivals together to resolve outstanding electoral disagreements on the basis of compromise, mutual understanding, and constitutional principles.
Addressing political leaders and civil society representatives during a national address, President Mohamud emphasized that Somalia’s democratic future must be built on structured dialogue, political stability, and respect for rule of law. While acknowledging the complex challenges surrounding the implementation of direct universal suffrage across federal member states, federal authorities reiterated that broad-based cooperation remains vital for safeguarding security gains and completing constitutional reforms. Opposition representatives have consistently urged the executive branch to pursue an inclusive dialogue framework that accommodates diverse regional and political viewpoints.
International partners and regional governance watchdogs have expressed cautious optimism regarding the scheduled November consultations, highlighting that consensus building is crucial for preventing parallel electoral processes. Parliamentary leaders and civic figures across Mogadishu continue to call on all political parties to participate constructively in the five-day talks to preserve state stability. As the Somali President invites opposition groups to Nov. 14-18 talks on elections, national stakeholders prepare for intensive negotiations to establish an agreed-upon electoral path forward.
