Mozambique Announces 5G Rollout and Sets Vision to Become Southern Africa’s Digital Hub

Mozambique has officially announced the start of its 5G deployment and unveiled an ambitious plan to position the country as a future digital hub of Southern Africa, according to the Ministry of Communications and Digital Transformation. 

The announcement was made at the National Communications Conference in Maputo, chaired by President Daniel Francisco Chapo, where government officials, regulators, private sector stakeholders, and international partners gathered to discuss the country’s digital future.

President Chapo confirmed the allocation of radio spectrum to major mobile operators for the rollout of 5G services, describing it as a key milestone in Mozambique’s technological modernization. He said the transition marks a decisive phase in national development, with digital transformation now viewed as a driver of economic growth, sovereignty, and social inclusion.

The government outlined a phased rollout plan, targeting 5G coverage in provincial capitals, special economic zones, and key tourist destinations by 2027, followed by expansion to densely populated areas and nationwide coverage, including all districts and administrative posts, by 2030.

Officials emphasized that improved connectivity is expected to enhance productivity, support innovation, and create new economic opportunities across sectors. The President also stressed the importance of developing local digital solutions, encouraging greater reliance on domestic talent and innovation ecosystems.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Communications and Digital Transformation, América Muchanga, highlighted the strategic importance of the sector in modernizing the state and driving development.

The communications regulator, the Mozambique Communications Regulatory Authority (INCM), reiterated its commitment to fostering innovation, fair competition, and consumer protection, while strengthening digital infrastructure resilience.

The conference continues with discussions on artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, network resilience, and the future of the digital economy as Mozambique positions itself within the global knowledge economy.
