6 South African towns that look like a movie set

These South African towns are so scenic and atmospheric they could easily double as Hollywood film sets. Take a look.

6 South African towns that look like a movie set

Every now and then you stumble across a place that doesn’t quite feel real.

A colourful harbour where fishing boats bob in the water. A tiny village dwarfed by dramatic mountains. A coastal road so spectacular it could have been built for a blockbuster chase scene.

South Africa is full of these moments.

While Hollywood often travels the world in search of spectacular filming locations, some of the country’s most cinematic settings are found in its small towns, places where every street, beach or mountain backdrop feels like it belongs on the big screen.

Here are six South African towns that could easily steal the show.

1. Kalk Bay

If Wes Anderson ever filmed in South Africa, Kalk Bay would surely be on the shortlist.

Its colourful fishing harbour, weathered boats, vibrant shopfronts and charming cafés give the seaside village endless character.

Add crashing waves, a working harbour and the occasional seal lounging on the pier, and every corner feels ready for the cameras to start rolling.

2. St Lucia

Some South African towns have beautiful scenery. St Lucia has that plus hippos wandering the streets.

Bordering the UNESCO-listed iSimangaliso Wetland Park, the town feels more like the setting of an African wildlife documentary than an ordinary holiday destination.

One minute you’re enjoying breakfast at a café, the next you’re spotting crocodiles, whales or hippos just a short distance away.

There’s nowhere else quite like it.

3. Coffee Bay

Wild cliffs, rolling green hills and pounding waves make Coffee Bay one of South Africa’s most dramatic coastal settings.

Nearby Hole in the Wall looks like something dreamed up by a visual effects studio – but it’s entirely natural!

The scenery here feels almost cinematic in scale.

4. Dullstroom

Mist hangs over the streets. Stone buildings glow beside roaring fireplaces. Frost sparkles across the surrounding fields.

Dullstroom has all the ingredients of a cosy winter film, especially during the colder months when its Scottish atmosphere comes alive.

5. Pilgrim’s Rest

One of South Africa’s best-preserved gold rush towns, Pilgrim’s Rest looks as though the cameras have only just stopped rolling on an old Western.

Historic wooden buildings, vintage storefronts and gravel streets transport visitors back to the late 1800s.

It’s one of the few places where history feels genuinely alive.

6. Arniston

Tiny, peaceful and impossibly pretty, Arniston has all the charm of a classic seaside romance.

Whitewashed fishermen’s cottages overlook turquoise water, while quiet beaches and dramatic limestone cliffs complete the picture.

As the sun begins to set, the village seems almost too perfect to be real.
