The journey may have been long, but man, did the spirit of Ubuntu make every step worthwhile! Having completed his walk from Johannesburg to Durban for three children facing life-threatening illnesses, Gregg Mitchley returned overwhelmed by the incredible support and motivation he received from the people he met along the way.
Johannesburg, South Africa (10 April 2026) – The 26th of March was the calendar date Gregg Mitchley had set to pause his daily routine and responsibilities to embark on a 600km walk for some special little souls – and he did exactly that.
He left Benoni and walked over 11 days, taking just one day to rest, to complete his trek in Durban on 5 April, all to raise awareness and funds for three children (Sadie, Jessie and Jordi) who are currently battling a rare autoimmune disease and cancer.
We previously shared the story of his quest, and recently caught up with him fresh off what he describes as an incredible journey – one fuelled by the support of the kindest hearts.
“While the physical challenge was immense, what stood out most throughout this journey was not just the distance covered, but the unbelievable support from the community,” Gregg tells us.
“What I found most fascinating and moving was how people came together behind this cause. From the constant hooting of trucks and cars along the route, to strangers stopping to offer drinks, supplements, sweets, chocolates, and energising snacks and photos with me, the support was simply out of this world.”
On the road, Gregg was met by countless people who had been following his journey on social media and stopped to take photos with them. In turn, they offered him words of encouragement and reminded him that he was not walking alone.
“Knowing that so many people were behind me, cheering me on, gave me strength when I needed it most.”
One of the most memorable moments of the trip came when he accidentally missed the turnoff at Cato Ridge and unknowingly walked in the wrong direction for nearly three hours.
“I had run out of mobile data without realising it, couldn’t contact anyone, and was unknowingly heading into a potentially dangerous area.”
Earlier during that stretch, a gentleman stopped to give him a cold drink and take a photo. Remarkably, over an hour later, he returned after realising Gregg may have been heading the wrong way.
“He pulled over, told me I was completely off route, and kindly offered to take me back to the Cato Ridge turnoff I had missed. That moment may well have saved me from walking deep into no man’s land late into the evening. Had he not come back, I would have continued for hours in the wrong direction, completely lost, with no realistic way of turning around and walking another 15 kilometres back. It was a powerful reminder of just how much people were looking out for me on this journey.”
This walk may have challenged him physically beyond belief, but above all else, it showed this athlete the incredible power of community, kindness, and people uniting behind a purpose and awareness.
While he hasn’t raised as much as he hoped to yet, donations remain open until 6 May.
“For anyone who would still like to contribute, donations are still welcome.”
