Agnes Edgard Celebrates 100 Years of Life and Legacy

One hundred years of faith, family, hard work and service were celebrated on Sunday, August 16, as the Older Persons Unit joined family, friends and community members in honouring Saint Lucia’s newest centenarian, Mrs. Agnes Edgard.

Born on August 16, 1926, Ms. Edgard, affectionately known as “Grinita,” “Ma Ta” and “Ma Bill,” was honoured on her milestone birthday by staff of the Older Persons Unit, within the Department of Equity, Social Justice, Gender and Older Persons, who presented her with a bouquet and commemorative plaque.

A pillar of the Paix-Bouche, Babonneau community, Mrs. Edgard’s remarkable journey reflects resilience and determination. Although she attended Babonneau School only up to Standard One because of family responsibilities, she ensured that her own children understood the value of education and honesty.

A hardworking and resourceful woman, Mrs. Edgard made farming her primary livelihood while also baking bread and cakes and making homemade ice cream to supplement her income. She married Paul Edgard in 1958 and raised five children, building a family that has since grown to include grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Faith and service have also defined her century of life. A devoted Catholic, Mrs. Edgard has served through church and community organisations and became known as someone her neighbours could depend on for help.

At 100, Mrs. Edgard stands as a testament to perseverance through hardship, generosity in service and unconditional love for family and community.

The Older Persons Unit extends heartfelt congratulations to Ms. Edgard and her family on this extraordinary milestone.
