Airport power outage hits terminal, but air traffic control stays fully online

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Belize Air Traffic Control Unit says all operations continued without interruption during a power outage affecting the Philip Goldson International Airport area on Sunday morning.

The outage was first recorded at 9:52am, following a series of intermittent BEL power fluctuations earlier in the morning.

Backup generators for both the Radar Room and the Control Tower activated immediately on loss of commercial power. Each system operates independently of the Belize Airport Concession Company Limited.

ATC confirms that no delays or disruptions occurred for arriving or departing aircraft, with radar, communications and tower operations remaining online and fully functional throughout.

The BDCA and COCESNA Belize generators also remained active until BEL restored full electrical service, maintaining continuity for local and regional coordination and surveillance systems.

Some airlines may have experienced check in delays due to terminal power impacts, but ATC says those issues did not affect air traffic movements.

“All flights were managed safely, efficiently, and without interruption,” the statement reads.
