Anguilla honours the life and legacy of beloved cultural ambassador ‘Brother Lee’

Dozens of tributes have been paid following the death of cultural ambassador Leroy Richardson, affectionately known as ‘Brother Lee’, on 6 June.

His contributions as a broadcaster, songwriter, environmental steward and champion of Anguillian heritage have left a lasting mark on the island.

The Anguilla Festival Development Commission and the Anguilla Summer Festival Committee extended condolences in a message to his family, friends and loved ones.

“Brother Lee was a true cultural ambassador, broadcaster, songwriter, environmental steward and proud son of Anguilla whose contributions helped shape and preserve our national heritage,” they said.

A gifted songwriter, he composed numerous calypso songs that went on to capture Calypso Monarch titles and earn a lasting place in Anguilla’s cultural history.

He was also a founding member of Native Sons Productions, through which he helped interview, document and preserve the stories, experiences and contributions of indigenous Anguillians for future generations.

For many years, Richardson served as a member of the Anguilla Carnival Committee, particularly within the Calypso Sub-Committee, where he contributed significantly to the development of the art form.

“His voice, wisdom, creativity and dedication to culture will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire all who value the preservation of Anguillian identity and heritage,” the message said.

“We honour his life, celebrate his contributions, and give thanks for his unwavering service to Anguilla. May he rest in eternal peace.”

Welches Village Fest organisers also published a tribute, describing Richardson as a “cultural icon, a true supporter of community life” and a man who helped shape the story of the community festival.

About 18 years ago, the adults of Welches Village came together on Welches field and taught the local children about the old ways of cooking, the old-time games and Anguilla’s traditional way of life.

Richardson attended the event and “without hesitation” began to broadcast it live on the radio.

“As people heard his voice sharing what was happening in Welches, they rushed to the field to see the event for themselves,” the tribute said, adding that it marked the beginning of Welches Village Fest.

“From that beginning onward, Brother Lee continued to show up year after year to broadcast and support the event,” the organisers explained.

“His voice helped carry Welches Village Fest beyond the field and into the homes and hearts of many.”

The tribute thanked Richardson for helping make Welches Village Fest what it is today, adding: “Your contribution, your voice, your support, and your love for culture and community will never be forgotten.”

Many others across the island offered words of condolences and tribute throughout the weekend, including Klass FM which broadcast a tribute programme featuring his music. Click below to watch:
