The Anguilla House of Assembly presented past members, speakers and clerks with legacy awards at the close of its 50th anniversary celebrations.

The awards recognised those whose service helped build and strengthen the island’s parliamentary institution over the past five decades.

The Anniversary Committee handed out the accolades during a special sitting of the 13th assembly on 3 July at the Atlin Noraldo Harrigan Parliamentary Building in The Valley.

Awardees collected their honours, while family members accepted awards on behalf of those unable to attend or those who had passed away.

The first set of awards recognised past clerks – Venis Simpson, Majorie Connor, Evalie Bradley and Carmen Richardson – for their contributions.

Awards also went to past speakers Franklyn Connor, Atlin Harrigan, Leroy Rogers, David Carty, Terry Harrigan and Barbara Webster-Bourne.

Finally, awards went to the members of the first Anguilla House of Assembly – James Webster, Campbell Fleming, Idalia Gumbs, Albena Lake-Hodge, Sir Emile Gumbs, Hubert Hughes, John Hodge, Everet Romney, Atlin Harrigan and Clive Smith Sr.

The sitting also featured the national song, official welcome and remarks by current members as well as a moment of silence for fallen members, staff and chaplains.

It marked the end of a wider programme of anniversary activities taking place throughout the week, held under the theme, ‘Honouring our past, shaping our future’.

Highlights included the launch at a sitting of the Anguilla House of Assembly, school visits, a parliamentary trivia night and visits to senior citizens’ homes.

The Anguilla House of Assembly in a statement thanked everyone who participated in the week and served Anguilla through its parliament.

“We close 50 years of parliamentary service with gratitude for those who came before and renewed commitment to a house ever stronger, more independent and more worthy of the people it serves,” it said.
