“Backrooms” Reaches $100 Million at the Box Office

Kane Parsons debut film Backrooms has cleared a box office milestone by hitting $100 million just six days after debuting in theaters.

The film now ranks as A24’s highest-grossing film at the domestic box office, overtaking Marty Supreme with only $96 million. While the ping-pong phenom film starring Timothee Chalamet remains the indie film studio’s highest-grossing project worldwide, Backrooms is slowly creeping up as it currently sits at $144 million, while Marty Supreme currently sits at $196 million.

Since its release, Backrooms has broken all film expectations by opening to $81 million domestically and $118 million globally. To add on, the film’s director, Kane Parsons, has become the youngest filmmaker with a number 1 film at the box office at just 20 years old.

The premise of Backrooms is based on a series of “liminal space” images that have circulated around the internet, which originated on the website 4chan and later reached social media sites such as TikTok and Reddit. The posts surrounding these images would state that one can enter these spaces by simply “no-clipping” out of reality and into a new one. As it began to grow, the Backrooms concept added more “liminal space” levels and monstrous entities that roam throughout them.

Parsons himself gave the liminal space concept new life with a YouTube webseries also called Backrooms which started in 2022. At the time, Parsons was only 16 years old when he began the series. The series’ introductory video currently sits at around 82 million views since its release.

The premise of Parsons’ film is centered around a furniture store owner (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor) who finds a secret doorway that leads him through a series of nondescript rooms. The film also stars Renate Reinsve who plays the therapist of Ejiofor’s character.
