By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 32-year-old Belize City man was remanded to the Belize Central Prison on Friday after being charged in connection with the stabbing of Charles Myles during an altercation earlier this week.
Byron Jeffords, an unemployed resident of Wagner’s Lane, appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison, where he was read charges of attempted murder, dangerous harm and use of deadly means of harm.
No plea was taken because the offences are indictable, and Jeffords was informed that the Magistrate’s Court could not grant him bail at this stage.
During the arraignment, Jeffords began telling the court, “I acted in self-defence,” and attempted to show the magistrate an injury to his left pinky finger. However, the magistrate cautioned him against making further statements that could incriminate him while he was without legal representation.
Jeffords was remanded until September 30, 2026.
According to police, officers received a report of a fight on Berkeley Street at about 10:05 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29. Investigators later visited the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where Myles, a 26-year-old labourer of Wagner’s Lane, was being treated for an apparent stab wound to his back.
Initial investigations indicated that Myles and Jeffords were involved in an argument that escalated into a fight, during which Jeffords allegedly produced a sharp object and injured Myles.
Myles was transported to the hospital in a police mobile and was reported to be in stable condition. Scenes of Crime personnel processed and photographed the area where the stabbing reportedly occurred.
Jeffords was later detained and charged with the three offences.
