Belize Electricity Limited says major outage due to loss of power from Mexico

By Zoila Palma:  Today, the Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) issued a statement updating the public on the major power outage that affected customers across the entire country last night.

At 7:28 p.m., BEL experienced an unplanned system collapse following a temporary loss of power from Mexico’s Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), due to issues on the Mexican power system.

BEL says that at that time, available in-country generation stood at approximately 103 MW, with evening peak reaching 122MW, resulting in a shortage of approximately 19MW.

“The sudden loss of a significant portion of electricity supply activated BEL’s grid protection system to restore the system balance by shedding load in various parts of the national grid. This resulted in outages across several service areas countrywide until the supply from CFE was restored at 10:54 p.m,” BEL explained.

BEL noted that available in-country generation continues to be constrained by a combination of seasonal and maintenance-related factors. Certain renewable generation sources remain unavailable due to seasonal conditions, while some generating units are out of service for maintenance, and others are operating at reduced capacity. These factors continue to limit the overall availability of local generation sources.

The company says that their teams continue to closely monitor available generation and conditions on the national grid, while taking all available measures to minimize the impact on Customers.
