At 5:23 PM on Friday, 28th August 2026, Zambian top amateur golfer Dominic Musonda holed out on the par-4 Hole 18 of Uganda Golf Club in Kampala.

Musonda smiled ear-to-ear having won the 2026 Johnnie Walker Uganda Amateur Golf Open before a sizable gallery following four gruelling rounds of eye-catching golf in the Ugandan capital.

The Nkana Golf Club member carded 9-under-279 in 72 holes played over four days to win the most prestigious amateur title on Uganda’s golfing calendar.

“I thank the Almighty God for this opportunity to participate in this wonderful event,” Musonda, who was runner-up in 2025 during the same event hosted by Lugazi Hills and Country Club, stated.

“I thank all my sponsors and everyone who supported me to be here,” the aggressive diminutive golfer added.

Musonda opened round one with a level par score (72) during round one. He bettered it with 4-under-68 at the halfway mark after 36 holes and further improved with the tournament’s best score (64) during the third round.

As they approached the final bend, Musonda had established a 6-stroke lead with the last 18 holes to play.

Round four was most troublesome for the 22-year-old Electrical Engineer, scoring 3-over-75 with 4 birdies, 7 pars and 7 bogies in the same round where countrymate Gilbert Chalwe had level (72) and Joseph Kasozi scored 4-over-76.

“I thank my Zambian friends who travelled with me in Uganda. We were under pressure from the time we arrived. Thank Uganda Golf Club for hosting this tournament. The back nine is not very easy, but I did well and finished strong,” Musonda added before he received the trophy from the president of Uganda Golf Union, Dr Jackson Were.

Chalwe finished second overall whilst the 2025 champion Joseph Cwinya-ai was third overall with 290.

Other top performers:

Joseph Kasozi finished fourth with 291 as the quartet of Lawrence Walakira, Joel Okoth, Musamba Kapoma and John Musiimenta finished joint fifth with 294 gross apiece.

Godfrey Kambale and Sande Lulet (296) completed the top ten positions.

The golfers were from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Zambia, Eswatini and the United States of America (USA).

The amateur open follows successful competitions in the ladies and seniors’ categories.

Hawa Wanyeche won the ladies’ open whilst Elijah Luutu and Catherine were successful in the seniors.

Focus now switches to the professionals’ open at the same venue.
