Belize sharpens emergency response with regional training program

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize is at the heart of the Caribbean’s disaster preparedness efforts this month.

The country is hosting the 2026 National CARICOM Disaster Relief Unit (CDRU) Exercise, bringing together 40 members of Belize’s military, police, and fire services for an intensive week of training.

Organized by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) through its Regional Response Mechanism, the exercise is the final activity of CDEMA’s 2026 CDRU program. The aim is simple but vital: making sure trained teams can deploy quickly and effectively whenever disaster strikes, at home or anywhere across the region.

Participants are sharpening their skills in regional relief and logistics coordination, deployment procedures, emergency telecommunications, warehouse management, and safer building techniques. They are also gaining practical experience with the CDRU deployment kit and the CDEMA Logistics System.

Led by Rasheed Pinder, CDEMA’s Program Officer for Preparedness and Response, the program combines classroom sessions with practical field exercises.

Running from June 15 to 22, the training will end with a full simulated deployment that puts everything to the test.

The exercise is funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation and the World Food Programme.
