By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have formally arrested and charged 25-year-old Rodrick Anthony Burns in connection with the shooting of Jaheim Thomas in Belmopan earlier this week.
Burns, a Belizean labourer, was charged on Wednesday, September 9, with attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm and dangerous harm in relation to the September 7 incident.
According to information previously released by police, officers responded at around 8:00 p.m. Monday to a dispute at a residence in the Las Flores area of Belmopan. During the police response, 26-year-old Thomas, of Roaring Creek Village, was shot and subsequently hospitalized in stable condition.
Police initially said investigators had not determined whether the bullet that struck Thomas had been fired by a licensed firearm holder involved in the dispute or by a responding police officer. Both firearms were seized and packaged for comparative forensic analysis, while police launched both a criminal investigation and an internal investigation into the incident.
Following the investigation, Burns was formally charged Wednesday with the three offences in connection with the harm caused to Thomas.
The case remains before the courts.
