Eli Lilly (also known as Lilly) is testing a new approach to weight loss that could take its popular medications one step further. The company is studying an experimental drug called eloralintide in combination with tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Zepbound and Mounjaro. Early results from a 48-week Phase 2 trial are promising, with the combination producing greater average weight loss than tirzepatide alone in people with obesity and Type 2 diabetes, according to CNBC.

So, what makes the combination different?

Tirzepatide already works by targeting two hormones, GLP-1 and GIP, which help regulate appetite, blood sugar and how much food the body takes in. Eloralintide works on a third pathway by mimicking amylin, a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps control appetite and feelings of fullness. Lilly’s idea is that targeting all three pathways at once could potentially lead to greater weight loss. So, they put their theory to the test in a recent clinical trial.
