A fifth double-double in a row from Saint Lucian forward Megan Nestor was insufficient for the University of North Texas women’s basketball team, which fell 54-58 to Rice at home on Saturday night, January 17. Nestor recorded her tenth double-double this season.
The 6-4 big from the fishing village of Canaries produced 15 points, one of just two players in double figures for the Mean Green on the night. She converted six of her nine shot attempts, and sank three of five free throws. Aysia Proctor hit for a career-high 25 points on 10-16 shooting.
On the boards, Nestor had one of her best games in green, gobbling up 21 rebounds, the second time this term she has corralled at least 20 caroms. She is joint first in offensive rebounds in the NCAA, and she is in the top 10 for rebounds and double-doubles.
The Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School alumna and former national netballer played a UNT career-high 37 minutes.
UNT had a three-game win streak snapped at the Super Pit, falling to their eighth loss in 18 games. The deficit was trimmed to just two in the final quarter, but Rice ultimately held off UNT’s late push to secure the victory.
“We knew today was going to be a battle,” head coach Jason Burton said. “We knew today was going to be a really good game. Hats off to Rice for getting it done… Still really proud of our team and the direction that we’re headed.”
