Brixton Windmill announces details of Mayfest Monday on 4th May – their ‘biggest event of the year’

The Brixton Windmill invites you to join them in Windmill Gardens on Bank Holiday Monday 4th May from 1pm to 5pm, for their free community event celebrating all things May Day.

This year’s event is packed with activities for all ages, and they told Brixton Buzz more about what’s in store:

Maypole, Morris Dancing and a “Jack in the Green”

We are excited to welcome our first “Jack in the Green” along to Mayfest – look out for a roaming leafy character accompanied by some mischievous “bogies” alongside. The Tatterjacks will be joined by London Metropolitan Brass Band for a short parade through the main field into the family field at 3.15pm before dancing commences!

Any children and families who have created Green Man Masks at the workshop in the family field are encouraged to join in at the back of the parade – the more the merrier! Maypole dancing for families and children will be happening at 4.15pm. This will be followed by the ceremonial destruction of the “Jack in the Green” – sounds like fun!

Milling Demonstrations 2pm to 4pm

Our volunteer millers will be on hand to show you how things are done inside the windmill between 2pm and 4pm. A sign in system will be available on the day to book in for timed visits next to the windmill.

Free nature and craft activities in the family field

This year’s activities include making Green Man Masks, Paper Flowers and our ever popular Flower Crowns. Our gardening volunteers will be running a planting workshop and our friends from Urban Canopy are offering a sensory plant activity. We are excited to welcome South London Botanical Institute who will be offering a microscope activity and also Family Volunteering Club who will be helping out with litter picking!

Drinks and Nourishment

We’ll have lots of food and drinks on offer. In the main field our friends En Root and Deuce will be supplying tasty hot food. For cakes, breads and pastries we have Bread Bread and Emily Hunt Cakes. Pints will be served by local brewery Clarkshaws. Our cafe will be offering hot drinks, Brixton Brewery beer, wines, home made cakes and ice creams.

Live music

We are very excited to welcome London Metropolitan Brass Band to a windmill event for the first time! They’ll be playing outside the Green Hut before heading off to join the Tatterjacks parade at 3.15pm.  Brit Pop Folk Orchestra will finish the event with their joyous folk take on Brit Pop favourites from 4pm to 5pm.
