By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 30-year-old Burrell Boom man has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after being charged with grievous harm following an alleged domestic assault on his common-law wife.

Howard Reyes, a labourer of Wesley Avenue, Black Berry Ridge, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, where he was charged in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred on August 10.

Police say Reyes’ common-law wife, a 28-year-old woman reported that she was inside a bedroom with her daughter at around 8:25 p.m. when Reyes entered in an aggressive manner and began questioning the child.

The woman alleged that as she and her daughter attempted to leave the room, Reyes blocked her exit before punching her in the jaw. She further alleged that he grabbed her by the throat and choked her, restricting her breathing, while threatening to kill her if she attempted to open the door.

The woman told police she eventually broke free and ran into the street, but Reyes allegedly followed her and punched her multiple times in the face and head. A passing motorcyclist reportedly intervened and restrained Reyes, allowing the woman to escape.

She later complained of pain to her jaw, head, neck and shoulder, as well as dizziness, and requested court action.

In court, prosecutor Cpl. Lumberton Ayala strongly objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the charge, concerns over domestic violence and the fact that a medical form detailing the extent of the woman’s injuries had not yet been received.

The Magistrate upheld the prosecution’s objection and denied Reyes bail. He was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until October 14, 2026.
