Chad Nathan shared another emotional update late last night after visiting Sidney Miller in hospital… and once again, South Africans found themselves crying happy tears over a friendship that started in the rain.
Western Cape, South Africa (28 May 2026) – The first time South Africans met Sidney Miller, he was pushing himself through a Cape Town storm in a wheelchair, soaked to the bone and completely alone.
Now, just a couple of weeks later, the man who once felt invisible is being cheered on by thousands of people across the country… and finding friendship and hope in places he never expected.
Late last night, Chad Nathan shared another update on the story that has gripped South Africa from the very beginning. This time, he visited Sidney in hospital after the amputation of his second leg. And while the video carried the heartbreak of everything Sidney has endured, it also carried something else too… warmth, humour, kindness and a friendship that has become so meaningful to so many people following along online.
Chad arrived at the hospital carrying a full snack pack for his now-famous friend, complete with a chocolate that read “Besties”. It was a small gesture but one that perfectly captured the bond that has formed between two strangers whose lives collided during a storm on the Sea Point promenade. And Sidney, being the kind person we have come to know, asked Chad to share the snacks with other patients in the ward too… just like he did in the very first video, when he insisted on giving some of his own money to people living on the streets. Even now, after everything he has gone through, Sidney is still thinking about other people.
The pair later went outside together, chatting and laughing while Chad shared another emotional update. During the recent Cape Town Marathon, Chad wore a shirt with Sidney’s name printed across it.
“I ran with your name on my shirt,” Chad told him.
And complete strangers along the route were shouting encouragement for Sidney too. That support has continued growing far beyond anything Chad or Sidney could ever have imagined. What began as one random act of kindness during a rainy run has now seen donations climb well beyond R500,000, with South Africans and supporters from around the world continuing to rally behind Sidney’s future.
The comments pouring in across social media keep giving us all the feels.
“This is beyond believable … best life story of 2026.”
“Such a beautiful story! Sidney looks so much better. You’re an amazing young man. Well done.”
“Chad, you are an amazing soul, and I hope and actually know …. that more people from watching your kind and selfless heart will start to “Pay it Forward”. Thank you for making a difference!”
“Human kindness…what the world needs now
”
Sidney has shared that his dream is simple. He wants to use the money to secure a safe home for himself and his mother. After years of surviving on the streets, sleeping near bus stops and feeling forgotten, that dream is finally starting to feel possible.
And judging by the way South Africans are still showing up for him, that support is not fading anytime soon.
*Chad’s Raising Hope crowdfunding initiative has been raising money since 2020. The total amount is a collective and has grown by R500,000 since publication (it is now R1,727,000).
