Church donates blood to ease shortages

The World Mission Society Church of God conducted a blood donation campaign in the Khomas and Oshana regions on 20 April as part of its ‘Worldwide Passover Love, Life Love Blood Donation Relay’.

According to the church, 78 participants, including church members and members of the public, took part in the initiative at the Blood Transfusion Service of Namibia (NamBTS) branches in Windhoek and Oshakati.

The church says the campaign aims to help address blood shortages and promote awareness about blood donation.

At the Windhoek branch, about 44 participants gathered from 09h00 and underwent pre-donation procedures, including questionnaires, blood pressure checks and blood tests.

A total of 23 participants donated 10 350 millilitres of blood.

NamBTS’s Windhoek branch thanked the church for the initiative and provided medical support and refreshments during the event.

Education officer Frieda Vatileni-Asino says the initiative will help save lives.

“We applaud the community of the Church of God for sacrificing themselves, donating blood and in the process each donor saving three lives,” she says. “It is indeed an amazing initiative.”

At the Oshakati branch, church members and residents donated 6 750 millilitres of blood.

A Church of God official describes blood donation as “a precious act that saves the lives of our neighbours”.

“Our members gladly participated in sharing life,” she says. “We hope our small act of sincerity can bring hope to patients, and we sincerely wish for their speedy recoveries.”

Participant Jimmy Shapopi (32) says he joined the initiative after learning about blood shortages through the news.

“I participated in hopes that blood can be supplied where it is needed,” he says.

Lea Ameya (23) encourages more people to donate blood.

“I hope more citizens will join in blood donations to help save lives,” she says.

The church says similar blood donation campaigns have been conducted in 68 countries, including South Korea, the United States, Germany, Brazil, Australia and Zimbabwe, with about 136 000 people participating.
