Crown seeks video-link testimony from witness in Robert Arnold murder trial

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Crown intends to apply for its main witness to testify by video link in the upcoming murder trial of Belize City resident Robert Arnold, citing concerns for the woman’s safety and immigration status.

Arnold, 21, is charged with the June 3, 2024 murder of Cruz Magana, who was shot and killed during an armed robbery at his family’s home and shop in the Fresh Pond Community of Burrell Boom.

During Arnold’s appearance before Justice Candace Nanton on Wednesday, Crown Counsel Joseph Perez told the High Court that the witness has left Belize and is seeking asylum in the United States.

According to the Crown, the woman remains fearful for her life and does not intend to return to Belize. Prosecutors also argued that travelling back to testify could affect her asylum application.

Justice Nanton instructed the Crown to formally file its application and set September 18, 2026, to deliver her decision on whether the witness will be permitted to testify remotely.

Arnold, who is represented by attorney Dale Cayetano, is scheduled to stand trial between October 18 and 23, 2026.

Police allege that two armed men entered the Magana family’s home and business, stole cash and a cellphone, and fatally shot the 32-year-old victim. Witnesses reportedly told investigators that they were able to identify the gunman.

Arnold previously faced a separate murder charge in connection with the death of Rudolph “Bobo Youth” Lewis. However, the case against Arnold and co-accused Travis Jamaal Herbert ended in June 2026 after the Crown entered a nolle prosequi.
