Editors Say Political Disagreement Must Never Become a Licence for Violence

The Editorial Board of the Daily Observer commends Binta Dibba for heeding our advice to report alleged threats against her life to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States.

We have previously condemned Binta’s distasteful comments against President Adama Barrow and First Lady Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow. We stand by that position. Political disagreement does not excuse insults against people or their families.

But neither does an offensive political statement give anyone the right to threaten another person’s life.

Binta has now publicly alleged that Baba Barrow, whom she identifies as President Barrow’s son, has been involved in attempts to have people attack her in the United States. She has further alleged that a bounty has effectively been placed on her head.

These are extremely serious allegations. The Daily Observer Gambia has not independently verified them, and no allegation should be presented as an established fact until investigated by the appropriate authorities. That is why reporting the matter to American law enforcement authorities was the proper course of action.

Now let the investigators investigate.

Threatening political critics belongs to the darkest chapters of Gambian history. The country should have no appetite for writing another one.
