During a conversation on The Link Up, the South African hip-hop artist reflected on a difficult period in his life when the verse came together, saying he was moving through a “dark period” while still holding onto his dreams. He explained that despite the struggles, he remained focused on where he wanted to go and what he wanted to express through his music.

He described himself as a “city boy,” saying, “I’m a city boy, like, I represent the city to the fullest.” Even with that identity rooted in Johannesburg, he spoke about his regular Friday trips to Soweto to visit his grandmother, a ritual that now carries deeper emotional weight following her passing.

Those visits, he explained, connected him to the rhythm of township life and shaped how he sees the people around him. It was there that he noticed a quality he deeply admires in the women he grew up around. “They are very ladylike, but they’re so street smart,” he said.

Emtee added that this is something he also sees in Nandi Ndathane, his partner and the lead artist on the song. “That’s something I admire, also with my girl, she’s exactly that,” he said, noting that she reflects that same balance of grace and street awareness.

He went on to describe how that connection made the collaboration feel natural. “She just completes what I represent, the streets, South Africa, the hood,” he said, explaining that the pieces of his life and identity seemed to come together through the track.

For Emtee, the record felt bigger than just music. He suggested that the timing and outcome of everything felt guided, saying, “God is at work, you know,” as he reflected on how his personal journey and relationships aligned within the song.
