Farm theft solved within a day as police recover solar lights

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The solar lights that vanished from a Nuevo San Juan farm in the dead of night did not stay missing long, and neither did the case stay open.

The Belize Police Department reports that a 56-year-old farmer of the village left his farm on Monday night at about 11:30 p.m. with everything where it belonged: two black solar lights and their panel, worth $300, mounted to a post and to the small board and zinc house that anchors his property on the village outskirts.

By 5:00 a.m., the phone was ringing. A relative had noticed the lights gone, and the farmer’s own checks confirmed it. By 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, he was at the police station with a name in mind and a request for court action.

What followed was the kind of turnaround complainants dream about. Statements came from the farmer and a witness, the lights and panel were recovered and photographed for evidence, and police secured a warrant in the first instance. Jorge David Mendez, 24, a labourer of Nuevo San Juan Village, was formally arrested and charged with theft, meeting the caution with silence.

Mendez, as with anyone charged, holds the presumption of innocence unless and until the court rules otherwise.

On a farm, solar lights are not decoration, they are the watchman that never sleeps, guarding the toolshed and the yard through the long rural dark. Taking them steals the light and the security in one pull. This time, both came back, and the courts will sort the rest.

Reported at ten, recovered and charged by day’s end. Police work the way every village hopes to see it.
