Former President Barack Obama and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani crossed paths for the first time on Saturday, meeting privately before heading to a Bronx child care center to read with a group of preschoolers.
The meeting, which took place just over a week after Mamdani marked his first 100 days in office, was an opportunity for the two to connect amidst the city’s rapidly shifting political landscape. Keeping things light and focused on the kids, the duo opted not to take questions from the press. Instead, they read the book Alone and Together to the students before diving into a lively singalong of The Wheels on the Bus.
At just 34 years old, Mamdani has quickly gained national attention for his youth, star power, and unapologetic progressive agenda. Taking office this past January, the democratic socialist’s platform has heavily centered on affordability, aiming to use the vast power of local government to alleviate the struggles of New York City’s working class.
A video is going viral of President Obama and Mayor Mamdani singing wheels on the bus with kids in a NYC school.

Recognizing Mamdani’s rising profile in Democratic politics, the former two-term president has reportedly offered to serve as a sounding board for the new mayor as he navigates the complex responsibilities of the role.
Obama’s mentorship might come in handy sooner rather than later, as Mamdani attempts to build and maintain a working relationship with Republican President Donald Trump.
While Mamdani has already met with Trump at the White House twice, once in November and again in February, to discuss key issues affecting New York City, that relationship seems to be hitting a rough patch.
Just this past Thursday, Trump took to Truth Social, claiming Mamdani’s taxing policies were “DESTROYING New York”. Trump also used the platform to threaten the withdrawal of federal funding for the city.
For now, however, the noise of national politics took a backseat. On Saturday, it was all about community, connection, and a few rounds of The Wheels on the Bus in the Bronx.
