*Sony Pictures gave CinemaCon attendees a terrifying preview on Monday, dropping the first trailer for “Insidious: Out of the Further,” the sixth installment in the long-running horror franchise created by Leigh Whannell and James Wan. Watch the clip above.
Per IMDB, the story centers on Gemma, a young mother raising her daughter in the house she grew up in, discovers she can travel into The Further, where she possesses an ability to bring what lives there back to the real world. The synopsis states: “The horror series returns to its supernatural roots. A new protagonist faces mysterious apparitions that go far beyond classic haunting phenomena. Evil finds new ways into reality. A trio of stalkers infiltrate a quiet suburb forcing a new family into the astral plane, where they uncover a terrifying truth: the Further is bleeding into the real world.”
The film stars Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, Lin Shaye, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Sam Spruell, Laura Gordon, and Island Austin. Jacob Chas directs from a script he co-wrote with David Leslie Johnson.

Jason Blum, Oren Peli, James Wan, and Leigh Whannell produce, with Ryan Turek, Steven Schneider, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and Johnson serving as executive producers.
The “Insidious” franchise spans five previous films — “Insidious” (2010), “Chapter 2” (2013), “Chapter 3” (2015), “The Last Key” (2018), and “The Red Door” (2023) — all built around the concept of supernatural hauntings and the malevolent dimension known as The Further, where restless spirits and demons threaten to breach the boundary between worlds.
What makes the franchise’s success particularly striking is its efficiency. On a combined production budget of just $42.5 million across all five films, the series has generated more than $740 million at the global box office. The most recent chapter, “The Red Door,” reached nearly $200 million worldwide, setting a new earnings record for the series.
“Insidious: Out of the Further” opens in theaters on August 21.
