By Zoila Palma: Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) has raised concerns over possible screwworm infestation in two wild species recorded in the Western Maya Mountains landscape.
FCD said its research team captured camera-trap images showing signs consistent with screwworm infestation in a puma (Puma concolor) and a post-fledging scarlet macaw (Ara macao cyanoptera).
According to FCD, the observations have prompted concern about the potential implications of screwworm for Belize’s wildlife.
FCD noted that while the population-level effects of screwworm on wild animals in Belize are not yet fully understood, the images provide an important warning that warrants closer attention.
FCD said the findings highlight the need for continued wildlife monitoring, documentation and research to better understand the prevalence and potential impact of the infestation on wild species.
