A group of Durban North friends have joined hearts to help transform empty spaces into worlds of wonder by donating jungle gyms they no longer use to two underresourced ECD centres – giving little ones the safe, joyful place to play and grow they truly deserve!
Durban, South Africa (11 May 2026) – Two under-resourced early childhood development (ECD) centres in local townships are set to transform their outdoor spaces into vibrant play areas for their little ones.
Durban North resident Candy Randles inspired a group of friends to make this possible for owners Zikhona Diya and Happiness Zulu, whose learning centres previously had no playground equipment at all.
“Our heart is to support Zikhona and Happiness, who are trying very hard to run effective early learning centres as viable small businesses,” Candy said.
“Being able to pay Avah Solutions to disassemble and rebuild these jungle gyms ensures we can use these very generous donations effectively!”
Precision and Safety
Mdu Zulu and his team were tasked with the technical challenge of relocating the donated equipment that had previously stood unused. To ensure the new play areas would be perfectly reconstructed, Mdu photographed the frames and meticulously numbered every strut, bolt, and nut before transport.
“I didn’t want the nightmare of not knowing which piece fitted where, and I knew that I needed to make sure the children would have a securely constructed jungle gyms which was safe,” Mdu explained.
The Impact of Play
The Domino Foundation’s ECD programme has started a three-year journey to support 36 new, independent preschools, most of whom would benefit greatly if other generous well-wishers would donate jungle gyms.
Nicky Walton, Education Co-ordinator for The Domino Foundation, noted that these new installations are vital for holistic development.
“We all know that the little learners’ physical development will be improved if they can clamber, climb and swing on a jungle gym, but outdoor play also stimulates their cognitive development, and their social interaction improves as well through playing together. All this helps move them to school-readiness. An added bonus for the small business owner is that jungle gyms attract new parents and thus the preschool grows its numbers and begins to thrive financially,” Walton added.
Anyone who has a lonely jungle gym can contact Nicky at education@domino.org.za or on 031 110 0730, and she will guarantee it a new home.
