Google Offers College Students Free AI Plans for a Year, Expands Gemini Study Tools

Google  is offering eligible college students free access to its AI plans for 12 months as part of a wider rollout of new and enhanced Gemini tools designed to support students during the new academic year.

For eligible college students in the United States, Google is offering one year of Google AI Pro at no cost, a package valued at $19.99 per month. The plan provides higher usage limits in Gemini, access to Gemini Spark, integration with Google applications such as Gmail and Google Docs, 5TB of storage, Google Health Premium and other features.

For eligible college students outside the US, Google is offering one year of Google AI Plus for free. The plan includes access to Gemini Omni, higher usage limits in Gemini and 400GB of storage.

Google is also offering students who want ad-free music and video streaming a bundle combining Google AI Pro and a YouTube Premium subscription at discounts of up to 70%.

Alongside the student plans, Google has introduced a dedicated student hub within the Gemini app. The hub brings together Gemini’s student-focused tools and offers, allowing users to create study notebooks, generate flashcards, take practice quizzes and access additional learning tools as they become available.

Google is also expanding its study notebooks feature, which was launched in June. Students can upload their own class materials, including lecture notes, and Gemini creates a structured study plan to break down learning topics. The feature can also provide diagnostic quizzes to identify knowledge gaps and generate customised lessons and quizzes, alongside a real-time progress dashboard.

In the coming weeks, Google said study notebooks will gain graphs and images as part of lessons. With students’ permission, Gemini will also be able to identify key dates such as exams and assignment deadlines from a syllabus and add them to Google Calendar. Students with Google AI Plus or Google AI Pro will also be able to create more notebooks using additional sources.

Google is further expanding Gemini’s interactive visualisation capabilities, allowing students to explore subjects through functional 3D simulations and other visual elements. Students can, for example, request a 3D demonstration of how DNA works and interact with the resulting structure by rotating and zooming in on it.

Another update is coming to Gemini Live, Google’s conversational AI feature. Students can use Gemini Live to discuss problem sets or study materials from Google Drive, while the integration of Deep Research enables users to launch comprehensive, multi-step research reports through voice conversations.

According to Google, Gemini can conduct the research asynchronously in the background, allowing students to close the chat or continue with other activities while the report is being prepared. Users receive a notification when the report is ready and can then discuss the findings, ask follow-up questions or refine the report through conversation.

Google said the student hub, study notebooks, interactive visualisations and Deep Research in Gemini Live are rolling out to all Gemini app users. The company is positioning the expanded tools as a personalised study companion designed to help students organise their coursework, explore subjects and prepare for exams using their own learning materials.
