By Zoila Palma: The Government of Belize, through the Directorate General for Foreign Trade (DGFT) and the CARICOM Development Fund (CDF), has launched a new initiative aimed at strengthening the competitiveness, climate resilience and inclusiveness of selected industries benefiting from Article 164 protection.
The 36-month project will run from September 2026 to August 2029 with support from a CDF grant.
Belize is serving as the pilot country for the regional initiative, which seeks to provide practical support to industries benefiting from Article 164, a provision that offers temporary protection to selected industries in CARICOM’s Less Developed Countries.
The project will focus on three priority sectors in Belize — furniture, animal feed and turmeric — identified through consultations with industry stakeholders and assessments of challenges and opportunities within the sectors.
The project will provide support in areas including industry research, policy development, business and technical capacity building, export readiness, climate resilience, sustainable practices and value chain development. The initiative was formally launched during a stakeholder and ministry kick-off session attended by representatives from Government ministries and agencies, technical institutions, industry stakeholders and other partners to discuss implementation, responsibilities and the expertise needed to support the project.
Through the partnership, the Government and CDF aim to help Belizean industries become more competitive, sustainable and resilient while generating lessons that can contribute to strengthening Article 164 industries across the wider CARICOM region.
