Beekeepers in Cayo receive training to expand Apiaries and boost Honey Production

By Zoila Palma:  Fifteen beekeepers in the Cayo District participated in a training session on apiary expansion, bee colony rearing and good husbandry practices today.

The training was conducted by Extension Officers Noe Oliva and Moises Perez of the Cayo District Agriculture Office.

The theoretical sessions were held at the Agriculture Department’s Central Farm conference room, while participants took part in practical exercises at the demonstration apiary at Central Farm.

Key topics included monitoring beehives, hive divisions or splits, swarm prevention, swarm trapping and the importance of proper and consistent apiary management.

Participants also learned how to identify common signs and symptoms of pests in their apiaries at an early stage, allowing beekeepers to take timely action to protect their colonies.

During a hands-on exercise, the beekeepers observed and assisted in successfully carrying out a hive division using a nucleus.

The Ministry of Agriculture said the training is expected to strengthen beekeepers’ skills and improve apiary management, ultimately helping to increase honey production across the Cayo District.
