Hennessy, the world’s leading cognac, made its mark at Resistance Festival, South Africa’s newest hip-hop and street culture platform, held on 11 April 2026 at the iconic Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg.
In its inaugural year, Resistance Festival positioned itself as more than a concert but also as a movement. Set against the backdrop of one of South Africa’s most historically significant sites, the festival channelled the country’s legacy of defiance into a celebration of youth, creativity, and economic empowerment. Hennessy, long rooted at the intersection of culture and excellence, was a natural fit as a key sponsor of this landmark event.
Resistance Festival brought together an extraordinary lineup of South African artists who have each redefined the sound and narrative of modern hip-hop. Hennessy Friend of the House Maglera Doe Boy took to the stage alongside Cassper Nyovest, Nasty C, Big Zulu, Emtee, Blxckie, YoungstaCPT, Zakwe, Reason, Dee Koala, Kane Keid, K. Keed, and Mfana Touchline, representing multiple generations and styles in a powerful convergence of South African hip-hop. The festival also featured a formidable DJ roster, including Speedsta, Ms Cosmo, SixbyNine, MacShawty, Azhul, Nikki Newlands, and more, keeping energy high from the first set to the final note.
Beyond the performances, Resistance Festival delivered a dynamic programme of workshops and masterclasses across music, DJing, dance, graffiti, fashion, and digital business, reinforcing its mission to translate creative passion into sustainable careers for young South Africans.
“Hennessy has always been part of the culture, not as a brand chasing relevance, but as one that has earned its place over generations,” said Lungile Mpharu, Brand Manager at Hennessy South Africa. “Resistance Festival is about freedom of expression, creative empowerment, and the voices that are shaping modern South Africa. We are proud to stand with a movement that champions those very same values, and to help create experiences that bring people together and keep the culture alive and thriving.”
“The first edition of Resistance Festival was always going to be a statement, and having Hennessy alongside us made that statement even louder. This festival is about ownership, freedom, and building something that lasts, values that Hennessy embodies. We’re proud to have a partner that doesn’t just show up, but shows up with intention,” said Osmic Menoe, Founder of Resistance Festival and Back to the City.
The choice of Constitutional Hill as the festival’s home added a profound layer of meaning to the day’s proceedings. A site synonymous with South Africa’s fight for freedom and dignity, it served as a fitting backdrop for a festival built on resistance, self-expression, and the power of community. For Hennessy, being part of this moment, in this space, was both an honour and a statement.
