Founded by two women in the sport, The Purple Sector is helping newcomers better understand motorsport and find a place within it.

South Africa (09 April 2026) – For many newcomers, stepping into the world of motorsport can feel overwhelming. The pace is fast, the language is unfamiliar, and it often seems like everyone else already understands how it all works. For those who didn’t grow up around the sport, finding a way in can be intimidating.

That’s the gap The Purple Sector is working to close.

Founded by Nicole Nolte and Viané Myburgh, the initiative was born from a realisation that not everyone has the same starting point in motorsport. Having both grown up around the sport, they understood it came naturally to them, but also recognised how different that experience can be for others trying to find their place.

Instead of building something complex, they focused on making motorsport easier to access and understand.

Through social media, they began breaking things down in a way that felt approachable. Explaining race moments, unpacking the basics, and creating content that didn’t assume prior knowledge allowed more people to engage without feeling left behind. What started as a small effort quickly began to resonate. As more women connected with the platform, it grew into a community.

From group chats to meet-ups at race events, women have found a space where they don’t have to navigate motorsport on their own. For many, it’s the difference between watching from a distance and truly feeling part of the experience.

That sense of belonging is starting to translate into action.

Some members of the community have taken steps into the sport itself, getting involved as volunteers and officials through Motorsport South Africa. Others are discovering pathways into the industry, while young girls are being exposed to opportunities they may not have known existed. There is also growing support for emerging female drivers, helping to amplify their presence and keep them moving forward in their careers.

The Purple Sector is not trying to reinvent motorsport. Instead, it is creating space within it. So that it’s more welcoming, understandable and most importantly, more inclusive for women at every stage of their journey.
