Oshana governor Hofni Iipinge has defended relocating a planned sports facility, saying he is not bound to follow regional council resolutions.
Iipinge made the remarks during a council meeting held at the Oshana Regional Council at Oshakati on Monday.
The governor was responding to criticism from Andreas Amundjindi, councillor for the Uukwiyuushona constituency, who accused him of overriding a council resolution by relocating a planned sport facility from Uukwiyuushona to Onamutai in the Ongwediva constituency.
Amundjindi questioned the decision, arguing that it disregarded the council’s agreed position on the project’s location and that it was tribally motivated.
However, Iipinge defended his actions, stating that he exercised his discretion in making the decision.
“I was not told to come and follow the resolution that was taken by (the regional council) otherwise I will take it back where it came from so that we can now get the direction whether we should follow the council resolution or not,” he said.
A regional governor is not empowered by the Constitution or any statutory law to interfere in decisions taken by regional councillors.
