International News: CARICOM, Nordic Ministers strengthen cooperation on Climate, Security and Development

By Zoila Palma:  Foreign Ministers from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and several Nordic countries held discussions on climate resilience, sustainable development, food and energy security, regional and international security, and reform of the United Nations system.

The annual CARICOM-Nordic Ministerial Meeting was held on September 22, 2026, at the Permanent Mission of Norway to the United Nations in New York, on the margins of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The meeting was co-chaired by Suriname’s Foreign Affairs Minister Melvin Bouva and Norway’s Minister of International Development Asmund Aukrust.

During the meeting, ministers welcomed the CARICOM-endorsed candidacy of Guyana’s Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett for Secretary-General of the United Nations. They highlighted the importance of leadership focused on strengthening multilateralism, building global consensus and upholding the principles of the UN Charter.

CARICOM and the Nordic countries also reaffirmed their longstanding partnership and shared commitment to multilateralism, sustainable development and international cooperation.
