By Zoila Palma: China and Taiwan intensified emergency preparations today as Typhoon Bavi approaches, while authorities in the Philippines confirmed that 11 people had died due to heavy rains linked to the powerful storm.
Although Bavi is not expected to make landfall in the Philippines, its influence has brought severe weather to parts of the country.
According to civil defence officials, 10 people, including children, were killed when a landslide buried two families sharing a home in Malapatan town, Sarangani province.
In Taiwan, authorities closed schools and many businesses across parts of the north, including the capital, Taipei, as forecasters warned of heavy rain, flooding, and damaging winds from Friday evening into Saturday.
President Lai Ching-te called on government agencies to work together to evacuate residents from high-risk areas, particularly in mountainous northern regions. More than 400 flights had been cancelled and over 100 ferry services suspended by Friday morning.
China also stepped up emergency measures ahead of the storm, which is forecast to make landfall along the country’s eastern coast on Saturday evening between Xiapu in Fujian province and Wenling in Zhejiang province.
