Israeli Navy Intercepts Global Sumud Flotilla Near Crete, Detains Dozens of Activists

The interception and detention of participants from the Global Sumud Flotilla in waters near Greece has emerged as a major international incident, drawing diplomatic concern and renewed scrutiny of maritime operations tied to the Gaza blockade.

According to multiple official sources, Israeli naval forces intercepted the flotilla late at night in international waters between the Peloponnese and the island of Crete, approximately 600 nautical miles from the Gaza Strip. The operation reportedly involved drones, speedboats, and electronic communication interference, as Israeli forces issued radio warnings directing vessels to divert course toward the Israeli port of Ashdod or return to their points of origin.

Organizers of the flotilla stated that more than 20 vessels were boarded, with approximately 175 activists detained. Among those taken into custody are 20 Turkish nationals, whose status has become a focal point of diplomatic engagement. Israeli authorities confirmed that the detainees are being transported to Israel for processing.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, which departed earlier this month from ports in Italy and Spain, described its mission as a humanitarian effort aimed at delivering medical and food supplies to Gaza. Organizers condemned the interception as an “illegal and dangerous escalation,” arguing that the vessels were operating in international waters and posed no security threat.

Israel maintains that its maritime blockade of Gaza is a necessary security measure. Officials reiterated that humanitarian aid should be delivered through established channels, particularly via the port of Ashdod, rather than through direct maritime attempts to reach Gaza.

International reaction has been swift. Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the operation, calling it a “blatant violation of international maritime law,” while Turkish authorities are seeking clarification regarding the condition of their citizens.

Reports indicate that while a portion of the flotilla has been intercepted, additional vessels within the broader 58-boat fleet remain at sea or have attempted to enter Greek territorial waters to avoid interception.

The situation remains fluid, with ongoing diplomatic efforts to determine the fate of the detainees. Israeli officials stated that the activists are being transported “peacefully” to Israel, where they are expected to undergo administrative procedures that may include deportation.

The incident underscores continuing geopolitical tensions surrounding Gaza, as well as the legal and humanitarian complexities of maritime interventions in contested regions.
