A new single from Makwa, Malagosh and Kwiish turns the spotlight on one of Johannesburg’s most storied townships.
Alexandra has been giving South African music its energy for generations, and Makwa has decided it’s time the township got a song of its own. His new single, “GOMORA,” is out now, and it comes straight from the heart of Alex.
The track is a collective effort. Makwa, Malagosh and Kwiish lead the project, with Mshengu, Sjijo and Vocalkat featured. Six artists on one record signals a celebration shared rather than a solo victory lap.
The release follows the reception of Makwa’s earlier singles, Umguzumbane weSummer and iLanga. Instead of chasing a new sound, he has used that momentum to look homeward. In his announcement, Makwa described the song as “more than music,” calling it “home,” “kasi,” and “Gomora.”
That framing matters in amapiano, a genre that grew out of township life and still draws much of its identity from the streets, shebeens and taxi ranks that shaped it. “Gomora,” the affectionate name locals use for Alexandra, is a statement of belonging. Putting it in the title and building the campaign around #KasiToTheWorld makes the single both a party starter and a point of pride.
The call to action is simple: take Gomora to the world. Makwa is asking fans to stream, share and spread the song well beyond the township’s borders.
