The Rupara Rural Community Development Centre in the Musese constituency of the Kavango West region is expected to become operational by the end of July.

The centre’s construction began in 2020 at a cost of N$141 million.

This follows a visit by a delegation from the Office of the Prime Minister led by executive director Petrus Sindimba, together with officials from the Kavango West Regional Council, to assess progress at the facility and identify measures to fast-track its official opening.

The project was initially scheduled for completion in November 2021, but delays resulted in the Kavango West Regional Council terminating the contract of Mudumbi Nankero Construction CC, which was hired to work on the conference hall, in 2022 due to poor performance.

The centre features a 38-room guesthouse, six VIP units, a restaurant, bar, conference facilities and a metal welding workshop, the Office of the Prime Minister says.

“The centre is expected to pave the way for skills development, entrepreneurship and job creation in the region,” the office says.

During the visit, Sindimba said the government is determined to ensure that such investments deliver tangible benefits to the youth and local communities.

He said the centre should not remain underused and urged regional authorities to accelerate the administrative processes required for its opening.

“Once operational, the centre is expected to play a key role in advancing skills training, rural development and economic empowerment in the Kavango West region,” he said.

Sindimba called for the speedy recruitment of staff and follow-up on outstanding approvals related to rates and budgets to ensure the facility opens as planned by July.

The facility forms part of government efforts to strengthen rural economies and improve access to vocational and entrepreneurial opportunities in underserved communities.
