Nikole Shurn, the first Black woman to serve as chair of the Kirkwood School District board of education, was recognized during a recent reception for outgoing board members.
Shurn was first elected in 2020 and served as board vice president. After her re-election in 2023, she was named board chair.
A former English language arts teacher in St. Louis Public Schools, Shurn is a 1996 graduate of Kirkwood High School. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business marketing from Kentucky State University and master’s degrees from Webster University in media communications and secondary education.
