K.O Shares The Philosophy Behind His Staying Power In SA Music. The glamorous atmosphere of the Hollywoodbets Durban July once again brought together South Africa’s biggest names in fashion, horse racing, and entertainment. Among the stars in attendance was veteran rapper K.O, who opened up about the mindset that has kept him at the forefront of the country’s music scene for almost two decades.

K.O Shares The Philosophy Behind His Staying Power In SA Music

From his early days as a member of Teargas to building a successful solo career, K.O has consistently found ways to evolve without losing sight of his identity. Speaking during an interview at the prestigious event, the Skhanda World founder reflected on how he has remained relevant while the sound of South African music continues to change.

Rather than crediting his longevity to following trends, K.O said his approach has always been rooted in authenticity and a willingness to learn from others.

“I think everything that I’ve done, um, much as I’ve brought in people from other genres, I’ve never really gone out of my way. I don’t have a piano song of my own. Sete it’s an Afrobeat track, you know. So I just, I’m always about like blending, breaking barriers, fusing genres as much as I possibly can, but I’m a student of what I’m seeing, you know, artists have been. I respect and I look up to them, you know, and all these other people I also look up to them.”

His comments reflect an artistic philosophy that has defined much of his career. Instead of abandoning his hip-hop roots to chase whatever sound dominates the charts, K.O has embraced collaboration and musical experimentation in a way that feels natural.

That approach was perhaps best demonstrated by the massive success of SETE, his chart-topping collaboration with Young Stunna and Blxckie. While the song carried strong Afrobeat influences, it still retained the lyrical style and confidence that have become synonymous with K.O‘s brand.

For the award-winning rapper, staying relevant has never been about reinventing himself for the sake of it. Instead, it comes from remaining open to new ideas, respecting fellow musicians, and constantly studying the ever-changing landscape of music.

As the Durban July celebrated South African excellence across different industries, K.O’s reflections stood out as a reminder that longevity is built on curiosity, consistency, and a genuine love for the craft. His willingness to keep learning while confidently embracing genre fusion continues to set him apart, proving that lasting success is achieved through thoughtful evolution rather than simply following the latest trend.
