Madagascar Becomes Third African Country to Test Direct-to-Cell Satellite Technology

Madagascar has become the third country in Africa to test Direct-to-Cell satellite connectivity technology, following a successful trial conducted by Airtel Madagascar in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Development, Posts and Telecommunications (MNDPT).  The demonstration, held in Sadabe on July 11, was attended by Minister Mahefa Andriamampiadana, officials from the Communications Regulatory Authority (ARTEC), the National Disaster Risk Management Office (BNGRC)  and other partners.

The trial marks a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation efforts, with Madagascar joining Kenya and Uganda as the only African nations to have tested the emerging technology.

Direct-to-Cell technology allows conventional 4G smartphones to connect directly to satellites when they are outside the coverage of terrestrial mobile networks. During the trial, participants successfully completed Madagascar’s first WhatsApp video call using the technology. The demonstration also featured satellite-enabled messaging, voice and video calls, as well as access to digital platforms including Facebook and YouTube.

According to the ministry, the technology has the potential to strengthen connectivity in remote and hard-to-reach areas where traditional mobile infrastructure is unavailable. It could also play a critical role in maintaining communications during emergencies and natural disasters that disrupt terrestrial networks.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting technologies that accelerate digital inclusion while ensuring compliance with legal requirements, digital sovereignty and security standards. It said expanding access to digital services remains a priority as the country advances its digital transformation agenda.

The ministry added that the successful trial underscores Madagascar’s progress in telecommunications and demonstrates the commitment of the government and its partners to expanding access to advanced digital technologies for citizens across the country, regardless of location.
