Mato: Performance against Tunisia gives us confidence

Uganda Cranes forward Rogers Kassim Mato believes the result and performance from the game against Tunisia on Thursday bring confidence to the squad.

Mato was on target as Uganda rallied from a goal down to hold Tunisia at the Hammadi Agrebi Stadium in Rades as the 2027 AFCON Qualification journey began.

Alaa Arous had given the Carthage Eagles an early lead in the 12th minute, but Uganda fought back with Mato finding the equaliser in the 68th minute.

“I want to thank my fellow players for the fight shown today. We worked as a team and kept our composure even when we went a goal down,” he stated before adding, “If you look at our previous meetings with Tunisia, this was the first time that we got a point off them, so we are happy, especially that it came away and this gives us confidence going forward.”

Mato asserts that if they keep performing well, such momentum will be important ahead of AFCON 2027.

“We all know that our slot at AFCON 2027 is guaranteed, but we need to do well in these qualifiers and keep the momentum going because that builds our confidence.” He said.

Uganda now shifts focus to the game against Libya slated for Tuesday, 29th September at the Hoima City Stadium.
