Twelve-week initiative will focus on housing quality, neighborhood revitalization, and resident engagement as part of the Year of Housing
Mayor Cavalier Johnson will officially launch the City’s 2026 Adopt-A-Neighborhood initiative with a kickoff press conference in Milwaukee’s Uptown neighborhood, marking the beginning of a 12-week, multi-department effort to strengthen neighborhoods through targeted investments, improved housing conditions, and community partnerships. As part of the Mayor’s Year of Housing, Uptown was selected through a data-informed process that examined housing conditions, neighborhood trends, property maintenance concerns, resident needs, and tenant code complaints to identify where a concentrated City effort could have the greatest impact.
“Everything begins at home, which is why housing is at the center of this year’s Adopt-A-Neighborhood initiative,” said Mayor Cavalier Johnson. “By bringing together nearly every City department with residents, neighborhood organizations, and local businesses, we’re making targeted investments that will improve housing, strengthen neighborhoods, and create lasting change in Uptown.”
From July to September, nearly every City department will work alongside residents, businesses, and neighborhood organizations, to improve quality of life through infrastructure improvements, neighborhood beautification, enhanced public safety efforts, expanded community engagement, and increased access to City services. A key addition to this year’s initiative is the pending legislation to create a Residential Rental Inspection District (RRI), which will provide expedited rental property inspections and increased landlord accountability to improve housing conditions for Uptown residents.
Residents can expect neighborhood improvements and community events throughout the 12-week initiative, including neighborhood walks, a Landlord Accountability Forum, City Hall Day and Community Cookout, business engagement opportunities, community clean-up events, and a report-back highlighting the initiative’s impact.
