Nanette Reflects On The Lasting Impact Of “Painfully Happy” Album One Year After Its Release. R&B singer Nanette is already imagining where her music will be a decade from now, as she celebrates the love listeners continue to show her album Painfully Happy.

The Durban-born artist took to Instagram over the weekend to express her gratitude to everyone who has connected with the project, sharing a heartfelt message about its growing impact and the possibility of reaching even more listeners in the years to come.
“Thank you for loving this album so much
I can’t wait to look back 10 years from now and see how many more people #PainfullyHappy will reach
,” she wrote.
Released on 29 August 2025, Painfully Happy has become a significant chapter in Nanette’s musical journey. The 12-track album explores love, heartbreak, family, grief, healing, and self-acceptance, drawing from the emotional complexities of her own experiences.
The project arrived during a particularly challenging period in her life. While her career was gaining momentum, including a feature on Apple Music’s Alpha playlist, Nanette was also dealing with the loss of her aunt. The contrast between professional achievements and personal grief became an important part of the album’s emotional foundation.
Listeners quickly embraced the honesty behind the music, helping Painfully Happy become her most-streamed project. Her dedicated supporters, affectionately known as Nesties, pushed the album past two million streams in the months following its release.
Songs such as “Abazali,” “Suddenly,” “Make It Dance,” and “I’m Not Psycho” stood out for their emotional depth, bringing together contemporary R&B, soul, and subtle African influences to create a sound that feels distinctly her own.
Nanette continued building on that momentum in July 2026 with the release of Painfully Happy (Deluxe), which introduced five additional tracks and expanded the story of the original album.
The deluxe edition included “Baggage,” produced by Grammy-winning producer Andre Harris, the vulnerable freestyle “Ask For Nun,” and the uplifting “One Life.” She also honoured her late aunt through “Little Light,” an intimate offering rooted in remembrance, while “Taking Me Places” brought together Nigerian songwriter Mbryo and South African producers MashBeatz and Christer following a songwriting camp in Lagos.
The continued interest in her music has been reflected in her streaming numbers. By early September 2026, Nanette had surpassed four million all-time plays on Apple Music alone, highlighting the album’s growing reach more than a year after its initial release.
Her latest message, however, goes beyond celebrating streaming milestones. Nanette appears more interested in the long-term connection her music can build with listeners, imagining a future in which Painfully Happy continues to find people who need its message.
That perspective speaks to the lasting nature of music shaped by real experiences. While trends and listening habits may change, songs rooted in honest emotions can continue to resonate with people at different stages of their lives.
With the Nesties already showing their support, Nanette is looking forward to seeing how far the album can travel. A decade from now, she hopes to look back and discover that Painfully Happy has reached countless new listeners, offering them the same sense of connection that has carried the project this far.
